With pet insurance plans starting at $13/month for dogs and $9/month for cats, Wagmo is one of the newest players on the pet insurance scene.

Founded only a few years ago, in 2017, Wagmo is an all-female-led pet insurer that delivers innovative and tech-first pet coverage features that ensure stress-free lives for both pets and their pet parents.

Wagmo’s team of diverse pet lovers is constantly improving to guarantee the most comprehensive pet healthcare insurance and wellness products for all types of pets, no matter their breed, age, size, or the medical conditions they carry.

This pet insurance provider is one of the very few that offers standalone wellness options to pet owners who aren’t interested in opting for pet insurance.

But when you explore Wagmo, you’ll find out that there’s much more to experience with them. Continue with this Wagmo pet insurance review to learn all about the rest of their amazing pet coverage options.

Wagmo’s Key Attributes

  1. Underwriter: National Specialty Insurance Company
    • AM Best Rating: A
    • BBB Rating: N/A
  2. Exam period: Pet parents are not required to subject their pets to a thorough veterinary exam before they apply for enrollment with Wagmo. The company may only request any kind of your pet’s medical history to evaluate if your pet has been treated for the same condition previously. This may happen when you file for a claim, usually only on the first time.
  3. Increase in monthly premium: Increases to your monthly premium could potentially happen as your pet grows older, especially into late adulthood. Wagmo does this since they understand that pet care gets more expensive for senior pets as they’re more fragile and susceptible to injuries and diseases. Additionally, Wagmo always keeps track of the fluctuations on the veterinary market. As costs for veterinary services rise or drop, so will Wagmo’s policy premium prices. Before any changes to your premiums are applied, Wagmo will promptly notify you by email.
  4. Claim submission time limit: Wagmo’s claim submission time limit is super long and lasts even 90 days after the policy period has ended. You need to make sure that if you want your claim for the current policy period to be approved, you need to submit it no later than 3 months after that policy period has ended.
  5. Claim processing times: Another aspect where Wagmo greatly excels is their claim processing timeframe. They will process any wellness claim within 24 hours of its submission, and the processing times for pet insurance claims range from 10 – 15 days even though this timeframe will become shorter as they become more familiar with your pet’s medical state.
  6. Waiting periods: Wagmo’s waiting periods don’t seem that attractive when it comes to drawing as many customers as possible. The only pleasantly-sounding waiting period is that of the wellness coverage since it’s non-existent. The rest start at 15 days at the minimum. So, accidents and illnesses have a waiting period of 15 days, and orthopedic conditions (cruciate ligaments damage or rupture, knee soft tissue issues, and luxation of the patella to be precise) are on a 6-month waiting period. And that’s not all – there’s even a waiting period for cancer treatments (30 days) – something that isn’t regularly observed with other pet insurers.

    Note that the waiting period for orthopedic conditions (6 months) can be waived if you take your pate for an orthopedic exam within the first 30 days of your Wagmo subscription and they come out healthy in that department.
    • Accidents – 15 days;
    • Illnesses – 15 days;
    • Cancer treatments – 30 days;
    • Wellness – no waiting period;
    • Orthopedic conditions – 6 months.
  7. Pet insurance coverage with Wagmo is valid with any licensed veterinarian, only in the United States. This is another aspect where Wagmo lags behind its competitors as many of them enable their policyholders to use their coverage while traveling to Canada, Puerto Rico, or even worldwide.
  8. Bilateral conditions entail that if some disorder affects both sides of your pet’s body and they’ve had it present on one side before you enrolled with Wagmo, the other side will be excluded from coverage as well. In Wagmo’s case, the conditions that are excluded from coverage in this regard are intervertebral disc disease and cruciate or knee soft tissue injury.

Wagmo’s Insurance Plans

Wagmo is pleasantly simple and straightforward when it comes to its pet insurance options. The company offers only one simple plan that includes everything that pet owners need – the Emergency Vet Coverage plan.

The Emergency Vet Coverage plan is designed to keep all of the unplanned and emergency accidents and illnesses at bay. This insurance feature is decently customizable and covers all sorts of injuries and conditions starting from small cuts and diarrhea issues to complex treatments for cancer, surgeries, and even vet-recommended euthanasia.

With three deductible options and two reimbursement percentages, Wagmo’s plan can be tailored to best fit your budget and requirements. The amount to which you can be reimbursed is always neatly fixed, as shown below:

  • Emergency Vet Coverage plan:
    • Per-incident benefit amount: $10,000;
    • Lifetime benefit amount: $100,000;
    • Annual deductibles: $250, $500, or $1,000;
    • Reimbursement percentages: 90% or 100%.

Cats and dogs of any breed or size can be enrolled on the Emergency Vet Coverage plan as long as they are at least 8 weeks old. They also need to be younger than 16 to be accepted on Wagmo’s pet accident and illness coverage.

Like all other pet insurance agencies, Wagmo imposes waiting periods as well. The waiting period for accidents and illnesses is 15 days, the one for cancer treatments is 30 days, and the waiting period for orthopedic conditions (cruciate ligaments damage or rupture, knee soft tissue issues, and luxation of the patella) is 6 months (can be waived if an orthopedic exam is taken within 30 days of enrollment).

You can only use Wagmo’s pet coverage across the entire US – currently, there’s no possibility to be covered by it while traveling outside the US. There are no veterinary networks with Wagmo – its coverage is available with any licensed veterinarian.

Lastly, besides reimbursements via direct deposits (bank transfers), Wagmo is one of the very few companies that can repay you for your claims via Venmo or PayPal.

What’s Covered With a Wagmo Policy

Wagmo’s pet insurance policy is designed to reimburse you (including taxes) for any medically necessary treatment every time you take your doggo or catto to the vet because they fell sick or got injured.

After they receive treatment, your vet bill invoice may include a number of items not only the main procedure. You can be reimbursed for all the stuff they received while still in the vet’s office like IVs, meds, medical supplies, hospitalization, and much more.

Here’s a more detailed look at what’s covered:

  • Accidents – fixing and mending things like broken bones, tore tendons and ligaments, stitching bite wounds, cuts, and lacerations, tending to burns, taking care of toxic ingestions, poisoning, extracting foreign bodies that were swallowed, and more similar stuff;
  • Illnesses – providing continuous and controlled treatment for digestive issues, vomiting, diarrhea, skin and hair disorders, ear, nose, and eye conditions, diseases caused by tick bites, heartworm, urinary tract infections, parasites, and much more;
  • Veterinary exam fees – coverage for emergency visits to the vet, check-ups, health inspections, follow-ups, consultations for treatment, medicating, and rehabilitation, and similar procedures;
  • Diagnosing conditions and lab work – MRIs, CT scans, X-rays, urinalysis, ultrasound, blood panel, ultrasound, and more;
  • Prescription drug endorsement – 50% percent of medications prescribed by your vet to enhance the medically necessary treatments for your pet. Meds need to be FDA-approved.
  • Cancer treatments – chemotherapy and radiation therapy;
  • Congenital and hereditary conditions – disorders that are passed from previous generations like wobbler syndrome, diabetes, luxating patella, glaucoma, abnormalities in growth and development, intervertebral disc disease, and more;
  • Hip and elbow dysplasia – covered for pets under 6 years of age;
  • Chronic conditions – allergies, arthritis, asthma, epilepsy, and more;
  • Hospitalization and rehabilitation during and after surgery procedures;
  • IV – Intravenous medications and fluids;
  • Medical supplies – casts, band-aids, bandages, splints, etc.;
  • Orthodontic treatments and tooth extractions as a result from an accident and deemed medically necessary;
  • Pet ambulance for emergency ground transportation – coverage for ambulance transportation up to $100 during a policy period;
  • Prosthetics and orthopedics – devices design to aid or assist the rehabilitative process of a covered condition or injury;
  • Alternative and holistic therapies that are deemed medically necessary by a licensed veterinarian such as acupuncture, hydrotherapy, laser therapy, chiropractic therapy, homeopathy, and more;
  • End of life expenseseuthanasia recommended by a licensed veterinarian.

What’s Excluded From Wagmo’s Coverage

Exclusions allow pet insurance companies to protect themselves from people who only sign up for their services, use their coverage, and then cancel, leaving the insurer with no other choice but to pay the bill. Taking full care of their pet should be the responsibility of every pet owner, not solely of the insurance agency. Another reason for this practice is to maintain policy premiums at an affordable level.

Wagmo’s policy doesn’t provide coverage for the items listed below:

  • Pre-existing conditions;
  • Spaying or neutering;
  • Prescription foods, natural supplements, and vitamins;
  • Boarding with a cattery or a kennel or employing pet sitting services;
  • Bilateral conditions including intervertebral disc disease and cruciate or knee soft tissue injury that are pre-existing;
  • Hip and elbow dysplasia for cats and dogs over the age of 6;
  • Alternative treatments like homeopathic therapy, acupuncture, chiropractic therapy, physical therapy, and/or hydrotherapy (including pool equipment) not recommended by a licensed veterinarian;
  • Dental surgeries;
  • Biohazard fees;
  • Cosmetic and/or elective procedures and surgeries (anal gland expression, ear cropping, declawing, tail docking, etc.);
  • Training and/or obedience classes;
  • Costs for treatments arising for breeding, genetic testing, pregnancy, birth expenses, and/or nursing;
  • Experimental treatments and procedures that are part of clinical trials;
  • Cloning procedures and organ transplantation;
  • Veterinary treatments for disorders or injuries caused intentionally by you or a member of your immediate family (including negligence);
  • Veterinary treatments that are a result of commercial activities including but not limited to organized fighting, guardian, coursing, racing, law enforcement, or similar activities;
  • Routine and preventative care such as wellness exams or tests, vaccinations, flea and other parasite control (an optional add-on is available);
  • Dental cleaning (an optional add-on is available);
  • Grooming and bathing (an optional add-on is available).

Wagmo’s Wellness Plans

Wagmo pet insurance wellness featuring a Cocker Spaniel laying on grass

Unlike pet insurance which is meant to offset the costs of veterinary treatments for unexpected accidents and injuries, pets need protection for all the routine and preventative care meant to keep them healthy from day one.

Wagmo is simply brilliant in this regard. The insurance provider offers three wellness plans that go above and beyond in providing all of the good stuff necessary for keeping your pet healthy and happy at all times.

The Value Plan, the Classic Plan, and the Deluxe Plan all contain wellness benefits like routine exams, blood work, vaccines, and other preventative care measures.

In the chart below, we’ll review every benefit that comes included on each plan and how much you could be reimbursed with for a full policy period:

The best thing about Wagmo’s pet wellness coverage is that it can be purchased on its own. It’s not tied to the Emergency Vet Coverage plan and, in fact, it can be combined with a pet insurance plan obtained from another pet insurance agency. This is an extremely rare find in the industry today.

As for the price, the three packages are always priced the same no matter the pet’s gender, age, breed, or area of residence. The Value plan is priced at $20.00/month, the Classic package has a price tag of $36.00/month, and the Deluxe wellness package costs $59.00/month.

All three plans require no deductible and provide pet wellness coverage that becomes effective the moment you purchase it.

Extra Features

It never hurts to have a few complementary features on board while you’re a current Wagmo policyholder. The company provides some additional resources that you can use to enhance your pet insurance experience and become a better pet parent:

  • Dedicated Pet Parent Concierge: Wagmo pulls tremendous efforts to always be there for its customers. So, in an effort to aid their policyholders whenever they have questions related to their pet insurance or pet wellness plans, or simply need a piece of advice for their pet’s current health condition, Wagmo features a complementary pet concierge on their iOS and Android mobile app.

    All pet parents need to do is download the app, log in with their account, and start chatting. Each of their highly-skilled customer support agents is a caring pet parent themselves so they’ll know exactly what you need to do with your current issue.
  • Employee Benefits Program – Wagmo introduces a special feature dedicated to employers who want to provide pet insurance and pet wellness solutions for their employees as a job benefit. That way, pet parents in working environments get to protect their pet children at a lower price, while employers achieve higher retention rates and promote a better business culture.

Wagmo’s Pricing Quotes

Wagmo advertises its pet insurance product as “as cheap as $13/month”. However, we decided to put that statement to the test and employed our research skills. We obtained several pricing quotes from Wagmo’s website and realized that what they say actually holds certain merit.

Monthly premiums with a high deductible and 90% reimbursement for young-mixed breed cats are indeed as low as $13/month. However, if you choose a 100% reimbursement with a lower deductible, and your pet is of a pure breed, expect to have that premium doubled, tripled, or even quadrupled in price.

But, even then, Wagmo is still more affordable than some of its competitors.

They deliberately set their per-incident limits at $10,000 and lifetime benefit limit at $100,000 because they’ve done the math and know that veterinary services don’t really go beyond that cap.

You can review the pricing quotes for several different cat and dog breeds in the charts below:

Discounts and Savings

It’s a common practice for many pet insurers to provide different kinds of perks, discounts, and options for savings so more pet parents can experience the benefits of having a pet insurance backup.

Such discount is the 5% off that every policyholder gets whenever they enroll another pet to their Wagmo pet insurance policy. The policy premium for the pet that’s enrolled first receives the original price, but every additional pet has a policy premium that’s 5% cheaper than usual. So, make sure to enroll the pet with the lowest premium first, and add the more expensive ones subsequently.

And that’s pretty much it. Many businesses that work by selling products and services offer a 30-day money-back guarantee, but Wagmo isn’t one of them. This is a huge setback that costs nothing for the company to fix and increase customers’ trust and purchase experience.

How Does Wagmo Compare With Its Competitors?

Comparing similar services could be one of the most helpful ways when understanding what’s really on the table with a package you’ve set your mind on buying.

By setting Wagmo against three prominent pet insurers we get a clear picture of what they all offer, how much their service weighs in benefits, and which of them is more suitable for our beloved pets and our bank accounts.

Today, Costco, Petplan, and 24PetWatch will enter the ring and measure their strength against Wagmo. Only yours will be the decision of who’ll come out as a winner based on their coverage options, claim limits, age restrictions, discounts, ratings, and more.

Wagmo vs. Costco

Costco offers their pet coverage through Figo, but with additional discounts. In comparison to Wagmo, Costco offers much larger discount options regarding Costco membership, multi-pet coverage, and discounted coverage as an employee benefit.

Figo’s services are quite faster and their waiting periods (especially that for accidents) are much shorter.

However, Costco/Figo don’t include coverage for veterinary exam fees – something that is available on Wagmo’s accidents and illnesses coverage plan.

Wagmo vs. Petplan

While Petplan doesn’t offer a 100% reimbursement of your vet bills, as Wagmo does, the company extends their pet coverage to be valid even when you travel with your pet to Canada.

Petplan also has an Unlimited option for annual claim benefits, doesn’t impose maximum pet age restrictions, and is excellently rated by credit rating agencies.

Another detail that pokes the eye is Petplan’s lack of a multi-pet discount option. However, they compensate for that setback by removing entry and monthly recurring fees.

Wagmo vs. 24PetWatch

24PetWatch is definitely weaker than Wagmo when we compare the amount of benefits they offer on their accidents and illnesses coverage packages.

However, 24PetWatch is quite more affordable than Wagmo. They have shorter waiting periods and even offer to pay your vet bills directly to your vet’s office.

Customer Service

Wagmo pet insurance customer service featuring a girl walking a black baby French bulldog

Wagmo’s customer service department is one every emerging company needs to look up to. The insurance agency offers all of the usual communication tools so everyone interested in getting an answer to their question can do so in minutes.

They are equipped with live chat, email, and an online contact form. The only thing they lack is a phone number.

Here’s some concise info if you need to quickly reach a Wagmo representative:

The most convenient (and fastest) way to contact Wagmo is through their smartphone app (available for Android and iOS). Every policyholder gets access to a premium pet concierge service – a tool enabling pet wonders to reach skilled representatives whenever they need pet-related answers.

Customer Reviews

Wagmo is still a newbie on the pet insurance market, so even though they have thousands of loyal customers already, online reviews are quite scarce.

However, we dug deep and discovered what some real Wagmo users have to say about their time with the pet insurance provider.

We believe this aspect of reviewing a service is crucial in forming the full picture about it, so below, we include several positive and a couple of negative reviews by real customers of Wagmo.

Positive Wagmo Pet Insurance Reviews

Really incredible service! I recently moved to a capital city and the pet care here is much more expensive. Signed up for Wagmo yesterday, took my dogs for their annuals today, and I was just reimbursed for almost the entire cost of their visits, which equaled roughly the cost of Wagmo for the entire year.

This service has literally already paid for itself on the first day! Extremely satisfied with the cost, the ease of filing a claim, and the speed of reimbursement. Can’t wait for my state to get the approval for the Wagmo Illness and Accident insurance. I’ll definitely be adding it to my dogs’ plans!

Ashley Smith McDonald

Wagmo makes me feel confident that I am really taking the best possible care of my dog – because I can afford to now! I am more motivated to schedule regular grooming and other services (sometimes two kids and my job help these slip through the cracks) because I know Wagmo has me covered. I love having this benefit and I am sure my dog is very happy it is in our lives too!

Allison Rapaport

I highly recommend Wagmo to any pet parent out there. If you’re like me, anytime your fur babies feel a little ill you want to make sure they are receiving the best preventive care but the cost is always a lingering factor. With Wagmo, I don’t have to worry about hurting my pockets because they fulfilled all my claims. My fur baby was taken care of and mama was able to buy her little boy a treat! I will be renewing it next year. So happy to be a part of the Wagverse!

Kayla Watson

Recently purchased Wagmo a few days before my pup’s vet appointment. She had to get a regular check-up, plus a bunch of extras like a heartworm test, gland expression, and her nails clipped. I was amazed at how much Wagmo covered – ALL OF IT! I’m more excited to bring her back to the vet than I’ve ever been knowing I can use my Wagmo plan to help cover the costs of care to keep her healthy. Highly recommend Wagmo!

Ed Krafcik

Negative Wagmo Pet Insurance Reviews

Disappointed. Unethical. Uses one set of wording on a website to lure people in the purchasing policy, then alternative wording elsewhere to deny claims. With this kind of behavior, I would not expect this company to be around long. Stick with the credible carriers.

John Lopes

I used to recommend Wagmo but I had to leave due to financial reasons for a few months but they refused to allow me to rejoin and I had them for years. Since when does a company refuse cold hard cash in the days of Covid-19 especially one who gave them glowing recommendations?

There is something fishy in Denmark with them. No matter what you do you can’t get a live agent as they have no phone. And you only get canned responses from their email. And you have to have an account to chat. So, what is a person to do to get answers as to what the freak is going on?

Tami Beaulieu

Conclusion

We’ve come to the end of our Wagmo pet insurance review. While researching all of its aspects, we discovered that Wagmo’s pet coverage for accidents and illnesses is supremely crafted.

During the quote building process, every customer is offered a variety of options to choose from and create the pet insurance plan that’s most suitable to their requirements. The final result is a solution that fits each budget while still taking care of all of your pet’s vital needs in terms of healthcare and wellbeing.

For an extra price (or as a standalone option), pet parents can get Wagmo’s pet wellness coverage and preserve their pet’s safety and health in the future.

Given that, Wagmo is somewhere in between affordability and costliness. But according to our research, Wagmo’s pet coverage products are highly praised by their customers which speaks volumes about their value.

Wagmo Alternatives

The following are some of Wagmo’s alternatives, not only for the sake of variety but to enrich your spectrum and let you know that there are all kinds of pet insurance packages out there. One of those might be just the perfect pick for you:

Embrace is the gold standard in the pet insurance industry. From comprehensive accident and illnesses coverage that’s available worldwide to coverage for bilateral conditions and large discounts of up to 25%, Embrace is a leader on the market that very few can measure up to. What we really love about them is their attitude toward diminishing deductibles. As long as your pet stays healthy, your policy deductible gets lower and lower until it reaches $0 as time progresses.

Prudent Pet is a similar pet insurance provider to Wagmo, although it has superior user reviews, higher discount opportunities, and an even more reasonably-priced pet wellness plan. Prudent Pet is a solution that should not be overlooked, as there are no pet age limitations and no annual or lifetime benefit limits. However, they’re still rather young and have yet to incorporate a mobile app to assist their policyholders with claim processing and progress tracking.

Our last Wagmo alternative is Petco. For anyone looking for a comprehensive wellness plan for their fur baby, Petco is a terrific option and a decent substitute for Wagmo. Unlimited wellness exams, grooming treatments, vaccines, and even free bags of pet food are all included in Petco’s Vital Care package. What’s even better, by using Petco’s services, you can accumulate reward points each month that can later be redeemed for more free pet stuff.

F.A.Q.

What makes Wagmo a valuable pet insurance solution that’s better than the competition?

In the sea of pet insurance providers, it’s practically impossible to rank each company and decide which one should hold the top spot. But Wagmo should definitely be placed among the highest places on the list of best pet insurers.

Why? We’ll let you decide on your own while we list some of its amazing features:

  • Wagmo has one of the best pet wellness care packages among similar services. The plans can be purchased separately from pet insurance and provide grooming and dental cleaning among the rest of the valuable benefits;
  • Wagmo provides a 5% discount for each additional pet that’s added to the base accident and illness coverage policy.
  • The company doesn’t require a complete physical exam to be performed as a requirement for enrollment;
  • Fees for veterinary exams are included on Wagmo’s Emergency Vet Coverage plan;
  • Prosthetics, orthopedic devices, and orthodontic treatments are also some of the many benefits that come included with each Wagmo pet insurance policy.

Is there a Wagmo mobile app where I can easily manage my pet insurance policy?

There definitely is. Wagmo provides top-quality smartphone apps for both Android and iOS. From there, policyholders can submit claims and track their progress, change their personal information, upgrade their coverage, and contact skilled professionals whenever they need assistance with a pet-related issue.

Is the number of claims that I can submit limited?

No. You are able to submit whatever number of claims you wish. Wagmo will process each claim and after a few days will let you know whether your claim has been approved for reimbursement or not.

When I become a Wagmo policyholder, can I still use my old vet or am I restricted to Wagmo’s network of veterinarians?

There is no network of veterinary offices that exclusively provide services only to Wagmo’s policyholders. With Wagmo’s pet insurance policy, pet owners can use the services of any licensed veterinarian in the country. That means you can continue visiting your old vet and Wagmo will reimburse you for the costs they charge.
