Odie’s Key Attributes

  1. Underwriter: Clear Blue Insurance Group
    • AM Best Rating: A-
    • BBB Rating: N/A
  2. Exam period: To sign up for Odie, you’re not required to provide a Certified Health Exam for your pet. However, after your pet insurance policy becomes active, Odie would require your pet’s medical records from the past 18 months in order for their coverage to kick in. If you gathered any medical records during this period, you’re advised to take the Certified Health Exam (a tail-to-nose veterinary exam) for your pet so their coverage can go into full force;
  3. Increase in monthly premium: According to Odie’s illness and injury policy sample, any increases to your premium price will be based on the changes in your pet’s age (as they get older they require more veterinary care) and the changes in veterinary costs in the area where you live. Given that, Odie might increase your premiums at the policy renewal date, but they will inform you of any changes in writing (mail or email), 30 days before the scheduled change;
  4. Claim submission time limit: Policyholders are required to submit their claims within 6 months (180 days) from their pet’s veterinary treatments, given that each treatment dates after the waiting period for the respective instance;
  5. Claim processing times: If you submitted all of the required documentation to Odie (18 months of medical records, itemized invoice from the vet’s office, and any payment receipts), Odie’s team will review and process your claim within 5 business days on average;
  6. Waiting periods: As is the case with most pet insurance providers, you’d have to wait for a certain time period so your pet coverage becomes effective for several different instances. Coverage for accidents becomes available after a 3-day waiting period (fast according to the industry standard), Illnesses can become covered after a waiting period of 14 days (average compared to the competition), and cruciate ligament events and similar conditions related to the knees can be covered only after 6 months from the moment of enrollment have passed. Routine and preventative treatments have no waiting period, as per usual:
    • Accidents – 3 days;
    • Illnesses – 14 days;
    • Wellness – no waiting period;
    • Orthopedic conditions – 6 months.
  7. Pet insurance coverage with Odie is valid with every licensed veterinarian out there. There is no network of veterinary members, no pre-approvals, or scheduled benefits. Your pet will be covered at any veterinary institution within the US, its territories (Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands), and Canada. It can be purchased throughout all of the US with the exception of Alaska;
  8. Bilateral conditions are, unfortunately, excluded from Odie’s pet coverage policy. Anything that can affect both sides of your pet’s body and has been present on either side of their body prior to your enrollment with Odie, will be excluded from your pet coverage. Instances include cruciate ligament events, elbow and hip dysplasia, luxating patellas, cherry eye, glaucoma, cataracts, ectropion, entropion, and osteochondritis dissecans;

Odie’s Insurance Plans

If flexibility is something that you’re mostly after, Odie will definitely suit your requirements the best. The pet insurer offers three plans designed to offset the costs for injuries and illnesses (the Great, the Better, and the Best plan), and one accident-only plan (the Accident Only plan) designed to take care of the veterinary services for emergency accidents for pets with certain diseases.

All three injury and illness plans offer tons of customizability, while the accident-only plan comes with pre-set benefit limits. There is a staggering number of available deductibles (20) to choose from, three claim limit options, and three reimbursement options. The Accident Only plan has only one option for each benefit. Let’s review them:

  • The Great plan:
    Annual deductibles: $50*, $100, $150, $200, $250, $300, $350, $400, $450, $500, $550, $600, $650, $700, $750, $800, $850, $900, $950, or $1,000;
    Annual claim benefits limit: $5,000;
    Reimbursement percentage: 70%, 80%, or 90%.
  • The Better plan:
    Annual deductibles: $50*, $100, $150, $200, $250, $300, $350, $400, $450, $500, $550, $600, $650, $700, $750, $800, $850, $900, $950, or $1,000;
    Annual claim benefits limit: $10,000;
    Reimbursement percentage: 70%, 80%, or 90%.
  • The Best plan:
    Annual deductibles: $50*, $100, $150, $200, $250, $300, $350, $400, $450, $500, $550, $600, $650, $700, $750, $800, $850, $900, $950, or $1,000;
    Annual claim benefit limit: $40,000;
    Reimbursement percentage: 70%, 80%, or 90%.
  • The Accident Only plan:
    Annual deductibles: $250;
    Annual claim benefit limit: $10,000;
    Reimbursement percentage: 90%.

    *$50 deductible is only available if combined with 70% reimbursement

All plans have fixed waiting periods. The Accident Only plan has a waiting period of 3 days for, obviously, accidents, which is the same for the other three illness and injury plans. In addition, those three plans have a waiting period of 14 days for illnesses and a 6-months waiting period for cruciate ligament instances.

They are all available to use with any licensed veterinarian in the country, but also if you travel to Canada, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the US Virgin Islands. Note that you can purchase Odie’s pet coverage plans in all US states (including Washington DC) except Alaska.

Pets of all ages are allowed to become a part of the Odie family. There is a tiny exclusion for puppies and kittens that haven’t reached the 7-week mark yet, so they’ll have to wait and grow up a bit to be able to get covered by Odie.

How to file a claim with Odie?

First, make sure you have all the necessary paperwork ready. That includes your pet’s medical records of the past 18 months (only for the initial claim), your vet bills (itemized invoices), and the payment receipts.

Once you’re all set, you can submit your claim in two different ways:

  1. Filing a claim through Odie’s online portal:
    1. Log into your Odie member account;
    2. Choose “Submit Claim”;
    3. Fill in your details and attach your invoice and receipts;
    4. Click “Submit”.
  2. Filing a claim via email or fax:
    1. Download Odie’s claim form;
    2. Fill it with the necessary details;
    3. Send it together with your invoice and receipts via fax at 530-285-4258 or email at support@odiepetinsurance.com.

Once you’re done, Odie will start processing your submitted claim as soon as possible. You should have it approved or denied within 5 business days on average.

Odie reimburses their policyholders only via mail check. That’s a big setback since that takes a lot longer than a direct deposit to your bank account.

What’s Covered With an Odie Policy

Let’s start with the Accident Only plan. This plan provides coverage for pets that are ineligible to get on one of the three plans offering coverage for illnesses and injuries because they have (or been diagnosed with) one of the following conditions: Cushing’s Disease, Addison’s Disease, Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, Feline Leukemia, Diabetes, or Cancer.

This plan is considerably cheaper than the Great, the Better, and the Best plan since it only covers the veterinary treatments for accidents. That includes fractures and broken bones, ingestion of foreign bodies, poisoning, orthopedic injuries, eye injuries, dental and facial trauma, animal bites, cuts, burns, tears, and similar injuries.

The illness and injury plans cover everything that falls under the Accident Only coverage plan with the addition of coverage for treatments for illnesses, dental disease, cancer, hereditary conditions, diagnostics, surgeries, and more.

To get a better sense of everything that’s covered by the Great, the Better, and the Best Odie plan, check out the following list:

  • Illnesses – bacterial and viral infections, stomach issues, vomiting, diarrhea, respiratory infections, dermatitis, gastritis, ulcers, infections of the urinary tract, hernias, skin disorders, ear and eye infections, and many more;
  • Hereditary, congenital, and chronic conditions – cataracts, glaucoma, asthma, diabetes, hypothyroidism, allergies, colitis, epilepsy, and more;
  • Cancer – biopsy, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy;
  • Dental coverage for fractures and dental diseases:
    • Extractions for all teeth and endodontic treatments for carnassial and canine teeth due to dental trauma;
    • Extractions for or carnassial and canine teeth for baby (deciduous) teeth, unerupted teeth, absent or thin enamel, and dentigerous cysts (coverage provided if pet got enrolled prior to becoming 6 months old);
    • Periodontal disease is covered for pets younger than 3 years without dental cleaning, but pets that are 3 years old and older need to undergo dental cleaning to get coverage for periodontal disease.
  • Surgery, hospitalization, and outpatient care;
  • Medication administered while in the vet clinic for a condition or injury covered by Odie’s policy;
  • Specialist care;
  • Diagnostic and laboratory testing – MRI scans, X-rays, CT scans, blood work, urinalysis, cystotomy, ultrasound, stool samples, arthroscopy, and more;

What’s Excluded From Odie’s Coverage

Every pet insurer’s core strategy is the protection of its assets and distancing itself from liabilities. Avoiding fraud and inappropriate usage of its services, companies not only protect their own business but ensure they maintain financially stable and stay able to provide reimbursement for their policyholders who are truly in need.

Therefore, they exclude a number of instances from their coverage policies. The most common include pre-existing conditions, experimental treatments, and veterinary procedures that are expected and planned ahead.

Odie does it too. However, they are great at handling pre-existing conditions as they only exclude those instances that affected your pet’s health only in the 18 months before you signed up with them.

You can review the list below to see everything that you won’t be covered for by Odie’s pet coverage policy:

  • Pre-existing conditions that were present within the 18-month period prior to enrollment;
  • Bilateral conditions that were present on either side of the pet’s body within the 18-month period before enrollment ( cruciate ligament events, elbow and hip dysplasia, luxating patellas, cherry eye, glaucoma, cataracts, ectropion, entropion, and osteochondritis dissecans);
  • Intervertebral disc disease if it was pre-existing;
  • Preventative care (wellness exams, spaying or neutering, dental care, parasite control, flea and tick control, vaccines, etc. (available as an optional add-on);
  • Cosmetic and elective procedures such as tail docking, earl cleaning, dew claw removal, ear cropping, declawing, and more;
  • Alternative therapies and holistic treatments such as acupuncture, hydrotherapy, laser therapy, physical therapy, aromatherapy, herbal therapy, chiropractic therapies; and more (available as an optional add-on);
  • Prescription medications (available as an optional add-on);
  • Veterinary exam fees (available as an optional add-on);
  • Costs for treating injuries resulting from an intentional act, inflicted by the policy owner or a close member of the same household (activities like organized fighting, coursing, sled or track racing, personal guarding, etc. are excluded as well);
  • Costs for treating complications arising from breeding, pregnancy, and birth-related conditions;
  • Fees for transportation and boarding including ambulance services;
  • Expression of the anal gland;
  • Grooming, nail trimming, bathing, and supplies for personal enhancement and satisfaction such as toys, treats, cages, collars, clothes, leashes, supplements and vitamins, dietary foods, and more;
  • Experimental treatments;
  • End-of-life costs for cremation and burial procedures;

Odie’s Wellness Plans

We, humans, are usually proactive with ours and the health and wellbeing of our loved one, as we want to avoid injuries, diseases, and as many trips to the hospital as possible. Well, we should provide preventative measures for our pets as well. After all, they’re a big part of our families too!

Veterinary and animal specialty centers often offer routine pet care for regular wellness exams, preventative vaccinations, treatments for parasites and insects, dental cleanings, spaying/neutering, and much more; To have a plan that could manage all of this proactive care for your pet is sometimes a godsend benefit.

Luckily, Odie offers not only one but two options for preventative care. The Routine Care and the Routine Care Plus pet wellness packages are designed exclusively to enhance your pet’s health and happiness.

They are packed with benefits to prevent them from getting sick while making them stronger and more vital.

Take a look at the chart below where you can notice all of the benefits included on both plans and the maximum annual limits that you can use for each benefit.

Preventative Benefit Routine Care Routine Care Plus
Spay/Neuter and/or Teeth Cleaning$0$150
Rabies Vaccination$15$15
Flea & Tick Prevention$50$65
Heartworm Prevention$30$30
Vaccination/Titer$30$40
Wellness Exam$50$50
Heartworm Test or FELV Screen$25$30
Blood, Fecal, Parasite Exam$50$70
Microchip$20$40
Urinalysis or ERD$15$25
Deworming$20$20
Total Annual Benefits$305$535

What’s amazing about these plans is that they have no waiting period to become active. Also, there are no deductibles involved here and your copayment percentage is 0%.

The prices of the Routine Care wellness plan start as low as $14/month, but we’ve noticed that they can go a bit higher in some states ($15/month in Colorado).

The Routine Care Plus pet wellness plan is usually priced at $23/month in most states. Sometimes this price varies for other states like Washington where this preventative package costs policyholders $29/month.

Note that pet wellness coverage is not part of pet insurance coverage. It’s a separate rider that reimburses for planned treatments and procedures that are listed above.

Extra Features

You’ve probably noticed that some benefits are missing in the “what’s covered by Odie” section above. Coverage for veterinary exam fees, prescription medications, and alternative therapies is not included in any of the pet insurance plans offered by Odie.

However, for a low monthly fee, you can add any of these optional benefits to your base illness and injury insurance policy. Odie doesn’t include them by default to keep their base pet coverage plans as affordable as possible.

Note that the conditions of Odie’s regular insurance policy apply to the following add-ons as well (deductible, coinsurance, and annual benefit limit).

Office Visits and Exam Fees Coverage

Whenever you need to see your veterinarian for an emergency, you can get your Vet Exam Fees covered by Odie if you purchase this optional add-on.

The benefit works amazingly anytime an unexpected injury occurs or your pet’s illness gets to them, but it won’t cover you if you take your pet to the vet for a regular visit.

Anything that stems from your original emergency vet visit will also be covered by this optional rider. Things like referrals, follow-ups, exams, rechecks, and after-hours visits because of an emergency are all taken care of by Odie’s coverage.

Prescription Medication for Home Usage Coverage

We noted that any medication that your vet administers to your pet during your visit is covered by Odie’s regular coverage (if the reason for that medication was a cover injury or illness). But, the medication that your vet prescribes for your pet which you need to take home with you isn’t covered by that base coverage.

The Prescription Medication add-on works perfectly for that reason. It covers over 950 different medications that you can take home with you and proceed with the prescribed therapy for your pet.

It should be noted that the prescribed medication should be for a covered illness or injury.

Alternative and Holistic Care Coverage

When your pet suffers a heavier trauma caused by an injury or illness the consequences can sometimes be terrible and impair their mobility and functionality. Pets, just like humans, can often benefit from some ongoing rehabilitative care that will allow them to recover better and faster thus improving their functional ability and mobility.

Unfortunately, such care isn’t covered by Odie’s regular pet insurance policy. To include such coverage, you must purchase the extra coverage for Rehabilitative and Alternative Care.

With that, Odie will take care of the costs for treatments and procedures involving acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, therapeutic exercises, heat therapy, cryotherapy, chiropractic therapy, laser therapy, stretching therapy, e-stim therapy, therapeutic ultrasound therapy, gait training, treadmill therapy, joint mobilization, and range of motion exercises.

Free Virtual Vetline

There’s a fourth extra benefit that comes with Odie which is completely free for every policyholder – access to a 24/7 Virtual Vet!

Instead of running to the vet clinic every time your puppy chews one of your socks, you can chat with one of Odie’s licensed vets and discuss the situation with them.

Odie’s televet service is available 24/7 for any pet-related questions you may have. To give the vet a better sense of what’s happening, you can even show them videos or photos.

You can find the 24/7 online care option located in the dashboard of your Odie member account.

Odie’s Pricing Quotes

Given that Odie offers decent coverage even without its optional add-ons, its premium prices are quite affordable.

We performed thorough research by fetching so many quotes so that we can justify our statement on Odie.

The company is within the average when it comes to pricing their premiums for accident and illness coverage for purebred dogs. However, the same plans for cats are considerably cheaper.

The same is valid for the Accident Only plan that costs about $6-$8/month for cats and about $9-$11/month for dogs.

While senior pets of pure breeds can tend to have their monthly premiums attached with a costly price tag, you can play around with the many deductible options and tailor the price down to what works best for your budget.

Discounts and Savings

If you want to lower the price of your monthly premium with Odie even further, there are a couple of options you could try.

First, Odie offers a 5% discount for every policyholder that enrolls multiple pets on their pet coverage. That is 5% off on each additional pet’s monthly premium.

Additionally, we discovered a discount code that would take another 5% off of your total monthly premium. The code is BRODSKY20 and as of this moment (January 2022) works like a charm.

Another great way to save up with Odie is to try and test their service in the 30 days after you enroll with them. If they don’t live up to your expectations, you can cancel anytime within this 30-day trial period and they will issue a full refund to your bank account.

How Does Odie Compare With Its Competitors?

In this section, Odie will compete against three fierce rivals to demonstrate who’s a better pet insurance provider for all pet parents out there.

Its three competitors – Companion Protect, Pumpkin, and Petko are all fighting to reach the top in the pet insurance space.

Let’s review what they all offer in great detail. You might even change your mind about Odie and go for one of its rivals if you notice that they tick more of your boxes.

Odie vs. Companion Protect

Companion Protect is definitely a breath of fresh air in an industry of too many look-alikes. The pet insurer offers a new perspective on coverage plans by being genuinely generous with its policies.

With an accidents and illnesses coverage package that boasts a low deductible, no waiting periods, and gifts wellness exams at no extra charge, Companion Protect excels in what is rather a market where quality is synonymous only with expensive premiums.

Odie vs. Pumpkin

In contrast to Odie, prescription medications, veterinary exam fees, and alternative therapies all come included with Pumpkin’s pet coverage. If you want to get the same benefits with Odie, you’d need to pay extra by purchasing them as extra add-ons.

Pumpkin has a shorter waiting period for cruciate ligament events as well (14 days in comparison to 6 months with Odie). They also have a bigger multi-pet discount of 10% for each additional pet.

However, Pumpkin’s waiting period for accidents is longer than that of Odie and the pet provider doesn’t offer a standalone accident-only pet insurance plan as Odie does.

Odie vs. Petco

Petco is a great rival to Odie when it comes to preventative care packages. The provider offers a standalone wellness plan called Vital Care which comes with discounts for grooming sessions and coverage for unlimited wellness exams.

What’s more, Petco provides a 10% discount for signing up multiple pets and a possibility to have your vet bills paid directly to your vet clinic so you don’t have to bother with the entire reimbursement process.

Customer Reviews

Real customer reviews are a great way to see how genuine policyholders experience their pet coverage plans. A lot can be learned about a service just by accessing a few testimonies.

Before wrapping up this Odie pet insurance review, we’ll put the focus on witnessing some online reviews about this insurer.

But, since Odie is still a newbie in the pet insurance space, online reviews from real customers are scarce. We dug hard and deep, but we still managed to dig out only one positive and one negative review about Odie pet insurance.

We’ll include those below, and update this article with fresh customer reviews as they become available online.

Positive Odie Pet Insurance Reviews

Jasmine is awesome

I’m very pleased with Odie for my Sniper. I have been dealing with Jasmine who I love. She is very knowledgeable, helpful, and sweet. This was the best thing I could have done for my Sniper. Thank you Odie.

Negative Odie Pet Insurance Reviews

I am writing this review because I don’t understand why it doesn’t honor what the policy says.

I am writing this review because I have on my policy that doctor appointments would be taken care of such as routine care, however, when I tried to submit paperwork for reimbursement it was denied. So I don’t understand why it states that in the policy if they are not going to honor it. I might just cancel. Also, there is no way to communicate with anyone in person.

Conclusion

Even though there aren’t many customer reviews about Odie out there, we’ve been thoroughly researching the entire industry for years to know what are the stakes of becoming an Odie policyholder.

Judging by their incredibly transparent website and sample policies, it’s safe to say that Odie is truly suitable for pet owners of all cat or dog types – no matter their age, breed, or size.

A crucial takeaway from this Odie pet insurance review is their approach to developing their pet insurance plans. There are four packages designed to take care of the most important costs for all accidents, injuries, and illnesses that might suddenly affect your pet’s health and welfare.

There are certainly other pet insurance agencies on the current market that offer more comprehensive pet coverage policies. Odie is indeed capable of doing the same, but they choose to include some benefits as optional coverage at an additional fee.

Another segment where they excel are their pet wellness care options. Odie offers two of those for an affordable monthly fee. With them, you can cover your pet for the costs of spaying or neutering, vaccinate them for free, take them to an annual or a semiannual wellness exam, take care of their dental cleaning procedures, and more.

By visiting our blog at Protect My Paws, you could easily discover many other pet insurance options. You can compare those to Odie and find out which one would work better for you and your furry companion.

Odie’s Alternatives

Odie can become a bit expensive if you’re looking to armor your senior pet with pet insurance coverage. A better alternative might be Prudent Pet. They keep their prices more balanced regarding your pet’s age while allowing cats and dogs of all ages to enroll. Unlike Odie, they offer benefits with no annual or lifetime limits as well. To give you the possibility of lowering your monthly premium, Prudent Pet provides sizable discounts and savings options too.

The pet insurance coverage offered by ASPCA Pet Insurance is another alternative to Odie for all those that want coverage for vet exam fees and alternative therapies included by default. They also have a bigger discount for enrolling multiple pets on one of their plans and enable policyholders to have their vet bills taken care of directly by ASPCA. To demonstrate they’re really dedicated to constructing comprehensive pet coverage, they even offer pet insurance for pet horses.

Our last alternative to Odie is Wagmo. Just like Odie, Wagmo is a newcomer in the industry so they offer awesome insurance products to climb up as high as one can get. Their pet insurance offer is pretty decent, but where they genuinely excel is with their three packages for pet wellness care. They can be purchased on their own and even equip you with coverage for pet grooming as well.

F.A.Q.

I’ve learned that some pet insurance companies don’t cover senior pets and drop them from their policies. Will that happen to my dog if I sign up with Odie?

Absolutely not. Senior pets tend to have higher monthly premiums as they require more veterinary care, but Odie would never deplete them of their pet coverage simply for growing older.

Is it possible to put my Odie pet insurance policy on hold for a while?

Unfortunately, that’s not an option with any pet insurance provider. You can cancel your policy anytime you wish and then re-enroll with Odie once more, but remember that any condition your pet faced before your second enrollment, even if it was covered by your first policy, would be deemed as pre-existing and excluded from the coverage of your second Odie policy. The same would happen if you’re late with your premium payments – Odie will cancel your policy after 30 days of no payment.

What are the reimbursement methods offered by Odie?

Currently, Odie reimburses their policyholders for their approved claim only through a mail check. Direct vet bill payments and direct bank deposits are not an option at the moment. So, if you recently filed a claim with Odie, watch your mailbox from time to time.

Could my partner use my Odie pet insurance policy alongside me?

Your Odie pet insurance plan is registered solely in the name of the legal owner of the pet. If the pet is owned by you, only you can manage their pet insurance policy. However, Odie will allow your spouse to file claims on your Odie policy in your name.
