Fast, flexible, faithful – that’s Figo! A pet insurance company known for being reliable, ultra-customizable, and prompt. It’s been with pet owners since 2015 when it was founded in Chicago, Illinois.
Born in a time when businesses relied on heavily digitizing their services, Figo leveraged the power of advanced technology to offer its customers a robust online solution where they can not only inform themselves on the plans and coverage but connect and socialize with other pet owners as well.
Even though Figo is among the younger pet insurance companies in the industry, it has managed to grow so much that in January 2020 it was proclaimed the largest private company in the pet insurance space.
Composed of vet techs, creatives, and insurance specialists, the entire Figo team has one thing in common – they’re all pet lovers and a community dedicated to making the lives of pets and their parents an enjoyable journey.
In this Figo pet insurance review, you’ll learn that the pet insurer is one of the few to offer reimbursement options of 100% and convenient pet wellness options. Read on to find out about all the rest.

Figo’s Key Attributes
- Underwriter: Independence American Insurance Company
- AM Best Rating: A-
- BBB Rating: B
- Exam period: Figo doesn’t require a veterinary exam for your pet so they can be enrolled with the insurer. However, to determine pre-existing conditions, Figo will inspect your pet’s annual veterinary exam that occurred within 12 months prior to their enrollment. If you happen not to have one, the first exam after your enrollment will be considered as baseline for your policy;
- Increase in monthly premium: To provide you the opportunity to offer your pet the best medical treatment options available, Figo will increase the price of your monthly premium accordingly to keep up with the current costs of veterinary healthcare. Your pet’s age will also alter the premium’s price, so you can expect an increase as your pet gets older;
- Claim submission time limit: Submission times for filing claims are different depending on the state, however, the average timeframe to file a claim is 180 days. We advise you to check with Figo at the moment you enroll to learn about your exact timeframe;
- Claim processing times: Figo processes submitted claims within 10 days, although half of the time they tend to process claims 1-4 days on average;
- Waiting periods: Just like most pet insurance companies, Figo imposes a 14-day waiting period for illnesses, satisfying the average value of this feature. However, their waiting period for accidents is much lower even when compared to similar providers – it only lasts a short 24 hours (3 days in AK, CO, FL, ID, MO, NJ, NY, UT, and WA). There’s also a waiting period for orthopedic conditions that applies only for dogs and amounts to 6 months.
- Accidents – 1 day (3 days in AK, CO, FL, ID, MO, NJ, NY, UT, and WA);
- Illnesses – 14 days;
- Wellness – no waiting period;
- Orthopedic conditions – 6 months (only applies to dogs);
- Knee conditions – 6 months in AK, CO, FL, ID, MO, NJ, NY, and UT;
- The state of Washington has a waiting period of 1 year for the following conditions:
- Cruciate Ligament Injury;
- Luxating Patella;
- Portosystemic Shunt;
- Elbow Dysplasia;
- Hip Dysplasia;
- Osteochondritis Dissecans;
- Cardiovascular Defects.
- Pet insurance coverage with Figo is valid worldwide which means that wherever you travel and take your pet with you, you’ll be covered by Figo (travel coverage is only available to Canada and Puerto Rico for policyholders that enrolled before December 2019);
- Bilateral conditions are excluded from coverage with Figo. If one organ or ligament has been affected before the effective date of your policy or during the waiting period, the other side of the pet’s body won’t get the insurance coverage. The conditions that fall into this category are the following:
- Cruciate Ligament Injury;
- Luxating Patella;
- Elbow Dysplasia;
- Hip Dysplasia;
- Osteochondritis Dissecans;
- Cataracts;
- Cherry Eye;
- Glaucoma;
- Ectropion;
- Entropion.
Figo’s Insurance Plans
To accommodate every type of pet parent, Figo offers three, highly customizable pet coverage plans – Essential, Preferred, and Ultimate.
All three plans differ mainly by how much they provide in annual benefits. Here, it is important to note that, based on which plan you choose, Figo offers different options for deductibles depending on your pet’s age.
This can be a bit confusing, so let’s review the three plans in more detail:
- Essential
- Annual benefits – $5,000;
- Reimbursement percentages – 70%, 80%, 90%, and 100%;
- Annual deductibles for pets under 6 years of age – $100, $250, $500, and $750 (only $500 and $750 if you choose 100% reimbursement);
- Annual deductibles for pets between 6 and 10 years of age – $250, $500, $750, and $1,000 (only $500, $750, and $1,000 if you choose 100% reimbursement);

- Annual deductibles for pets between 6 and 10 years of age – $250, $500, $750, and $1,000;
- Annual deductibles for pets over 10 years of age – $500, $750, $1,000, and $1,500;
Whichever plan you decide to opt for, rest assured that they are great for covering a tremendous amount of veterinary treatments for accidents, injuries, and illnesses that may threaten the life of your beloved pup or kitten.
The waiting periods are also within decent timeframes – 14 days for illnesses, 1 day for accidents (3 days in AK, CO, FL, ID, MO, NJ, NY, UT, and WA), and 6 months for orthopedic conditions that affect dogs. The orthopedic conditions waiting period may be waived by obtaining a health certificate through an orthopedic exam completed within the first 30 days of purchasing your policy).
Your Figo pet insurance policy is valid anywhere in the world if you bring your pet with you while traveling.
Lastly, all pets above 8 weeks of age are welcome to enroll in any of the insurance plans. There are no upper age limits for signing up.
What’s Covered With a Figo Policy
There’s an extraordinary amount of health conditions included in all of Figo’s accident and illness coverage plans.
Here, we’ll mention some of the most common and largely treated medical conditions for cats and dogs that Figo covers with its policies, however, you can go with the rule of thumb that it’s everything that’s not a pre-existing condition and unexpectedly affects the health and life of pets.
- Accidents and emergencies – bite wounds, cuts, tears, sprains, bone and facial trauma and fractures, burns, car accidents, poisoning, ingestion of foreign bodies, and many more;
- Illnesses – knee conditions, diarrhea, vomiting, heartworm, infections of various organs such as kidneys, bladder, eye, ears, urinary tracts, and many more;
- Hereditary and congenital conditions – breed-specific conditions such as elbow and hip dysplasia, thyroid disease, diabetes, respiratory infections, and genetic disorders such as heart disease, liver disease, cataracts, disorders of the nervous system, and many more;
- Chronic conditions – arthritis, skin conditions, allergies, asthma, epilepsy, and many more;
- Cancer treatments – chemotherapy and radiation treatments;
- Alternative and holistic treatments – chiropractic treatments, hydrotherapy, acupuncture, physical and rehabilitative therapy, and more;
- Non-routine dental treatments for dental trauma and tooth extractions as a result of an accident;
- Medical boarding, medical supplies (splits, casts, bandages), IV fluids, surgery, and hospitalization;
- Diagnostics and laboratory examinations – blood work, urinalysis, CT scans, MRIs, X-rays, ultrasound, and more;
- FDA-approved prescription medications including medication for treating behavioral issues;
- Prosthetic and orthopedic devices including those related to recovery from surgery, amputation, arthritis, and paralysis;
- Vet-recommended euthanasia, cremation, and burial expenses.
Veterinary exam fees can also be covered if the optional add-on is purchased in addition to one of the three basic plans.
What’s Excluded From Figo’s Coverage
Pet insurance companies regularly exclude a number of items from their coverage in order to protect their assets and financial stability from liabilities. That’s the case with Figo as well.
Among the expected exclusions, like pre-existing conditions and treatments relating to breeding issues, Figo makes it abundantly clear what the rest of its exclusions are, so you’re always informed upfront of what you can expect from your pet insurance agent.
The following are the most prominent exclusions from Figo’s pet coverage:
- Pre-existing conditions;
- Veterinary exam fees (Available as an optional add-on);
- Routine, preventive, or wellness care like vaccines, deworming, wellness exams, microchip, health certificate, etc. (Available as an optional add-on);
- Spaying or neutering;
- Experimental procedures;
- Breeding, pregnancy, whelping, or queening;
- Cloned pets or cloning procedures;
- Cosmetic or elective procedures like tail docking, ear cropping, declawing, and more;
- Supplements and vitamins;
- Intentional injury caused by the pet’s owner or their close family members;
- Routine dental care like cleaning;
- Most parasites.
Figo’s Wellness Plans
Being proactive and staying ahead of your pet’s needs are the key characteristics of a pet parent every pet dreams of. But thinking of everything that they might need in order to stay consistently healthy, plus budgeting for it, isn’t exactly the easiest thing in the world. And opting for a pet wellness plan might considerably simplify things.
Figo offers two tiers of preventive pet care that you can add as riders to your basic coverage plan to help you pay for preventative procedures such as spaying/neutering, dental cleaning, vaccines, wellness bloodwork and imaging, and more. The following charts demonstrate everything that comes with the plans and how much goes toward each benefit annually.
Benefits | Wellness – Basic | Wellness – Plus |
---|---|---|
Wellness Exams | $20 | $40 |
Vaccines: – Flea, Tick, and Heartworm; – Heartworm Preventative; – Rabies; – DHLP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza); – Parvovirus/Corona; – Bordetella; – Lyme; – Canine Influenza; – FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia); – Leukemia; – FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis); – Other Vaccines as approved for general use by AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association), or equivalent industry regulating entity. | $30 | $50 |
Spay/Neuter or Teeth Cleaning | $40 | $75 |
Tests: – Blood Panel; – Heartworm Test; – Fecal Test; – Urinalysis Test; – FeLV Test (Feline Leukemia Virus). | $20 | $45 |
Microchip / Health Certificate | $15 | $30 |
Deworming | $10 | $10 |
Annual Maximum | $135 | $250 |
Note: Figo’s wellness plans are available in all states in the US except Florida and Utah.
Extra Features
Besides the two plans for Pet Wellness, Figo offers two more power-ups that are optional and add more value to your basic accident and illness coverage. Additionally, there is a third complimentary feature that we’ll also discuss below.
Veterinary Exam Fees for Accident and Illness Visit
Not to be mixed with fees for wellness exams and routine visits, this benefit’s purpose is to mitigate the costs of fees resulting from regular veterinary visits for covered accidents, emergencies, or illnesses.
This add-on covers all the veterinary exam fees for every condition that is eligible for coverage with your Figo pet insurance policy.
The monthly price of this add-on is added to the price of your monthly premium and it always varies depending on your originally chosen coverage benefits.
Given that, the Veterinary Exam Fees add-on can cost anywhere from $1.25/month for 1-year-old mixed kittens and $1.42/month for 1-year-old mixed puppies (if you choose a high deductible with a low reimbursement rate) to $26.19/month for a 10-year-old Abyssinian and $19.56 for a 10-year-old French Bulldog (with a low deductible option and a high reimbursement rate).
Extra Care Pack
If you want to complete your coverage with the ultimate benefits, especially in the case of third-party property damage, there’s the Extra Care Pack by Figo. This pack provides coverage for the most unfortunate events and it can be added to your basic pet coverage for a fixed price of $6.62/month.
Review what benefits come with this plan in the chart below:
Benefits | Maximum Amount |
---|---|
Final respects: cremation and burial (resulting from an accident, illness, or injury that’s not covered by Figo) | up to $250 |
Lost pet advertising and reward | Undisclosed |
Vacation cancellation due to pet emergency | Undisclosed |
Boarding fees | Undisclosed |
Pet theft or loss due to straying | up to $150 |
Third-party property damage liability | up to $10,000 per policy period and subject to a separate deductible |
Note: Figo’s Extra Care Pack is available in all states in the US except Florida and Utah.
Figo Pet Cloud
The Figo Pet Cloud is a complementary feature for every Figo policyholder. A one-stop place to connect you with places, people, and all things pet.
It’s a mobile app that works on both Android and iOS smart devices and you can use it to discover pet parents in your area by sharing photos and videos, chatting, exchanging pet parenting advice, scheduling pet play dates, and much more.
Additionally, you can explore your area to find pet parks, pet-friendly restaurants, daycare centers, and even find dog walkers.
With it, you can receive push notifications to remind you when your pet’s next vet visit or vaccine is or talk to a live vet 24/7 to always get the answers you need.
What’s more, you can always update your pet’s current medical records to make them available at any time, even in emergency situations.
Figo’s Pricing Quotes
We discovered that the average prices for Figo’s accident and illness coverage amount to about $50/month for mixed-breed dogs and $28/month for domestic cats. However, purebred pets come with more risks to their health, hence their premiums are costlier. Purebred dogs can enroll with Figo on a plan ranging from about $60/month to about $100/month and purebred cats can get their coverage with a pricing tag of about $30-$60/month. (We used a $500 deductible and 90% reimbursement to calculate this estimation.)
That being said, the price of your monthly premium is heavily affected by your state of residence and your pet’s characteristics (age, sex, breed, size, and health condition). Additionally, your premium with Figo will become higher as your pet gets older. That is due to the fluctuations in veterinary services in your area and the health risks that come with your pet’s age.
You can use the different options for annual benefits, deductibles, and reimbursement to bring the price of your plan’s monthly premium to a more satisfactory range.

Pricing Plans for Pet Wellness
We’ve learned that Figo offers optional preventative pet care riders in most states across the nation. The two plans can help toward easing your vet bills that go toward routine veterinary treatments such as vaccinations, spaying or neutering, deworming, microchipping, or simply getting a healthcare certificate.
The Basic and the Plus wellness tiers have a fixed monthly price that is added to the total of your monthly premium. It’s $9.50 per month for the Basic wellness plan and $16.50 per month for the Plus wellness plan. For Californians, the Basic wellness plan costs $5.50/month and the Plus wellness plan costs $9.50/month.
Remember that these plans cannot be purchased independently and act as a standalone coverage; they can only be attached to your basic accident and illness coverage by Figo.
Discounts and Savings

We’ve combed through every piece of information that we could find about Figo and made sure we left no stone unturned. All to provide you with all the means to help you bring the price of your monthly premium as lower as possible.
We discovered two ways that you can use to save up:
- Multi-pet discount – Figo provides an extra benefit if you sign up multiple pets with them. The company offers a 5%-10% discount for each additional pet on the same policy, depending on where you come from. Obtain a free quote from Figo’s website to learn which discount you qualify for.
- Employee benefits – It’s a practice for many modern companies to offer pet insurance as a benefit to their employees. The incentive is a great way to attract great talent (most millennials own a pet today), improve the culture within the company, and increase retention. Figo makes all of it possible by offering a special program for employers that’s available to companies that want to include competitively priced pet insurance as a benefit to their employees. The discount coming with this employee benefit by Figo is 5-10%.
Ultimately, there’s the 30-day money-back guarantee that allows you to experience Figo’s services first hand and decide whether it’s a perfect match for your idea of what pet insurance should be. If you don’t submit any claims within your first 30 days with the insurer, you’ll receive a full refund of your first payment.
How Does Figo Compare With Its Competitors?
You’re probably familiar with the many pet insurance companies out there that offer similar services with many differences in between. Some pet parents want the best coverage and aren’t very concerned about the price, while others appreciate a customizable policy because they can’t afford a hefty insurance bill.
Here, we’re comparing Figo with some of the best pet insurance providers which are all great in their own regard but might only accommodate a certain group of pet owners. Check the comparison tables below to find out which is a better match for your priorities.
Figo vs. Healthy Paws
Healthy Paws is surprisingly fast when processing claims that it’s quite rare to find a decent contender on that front. Just like Figo, they’re highly praised in the pet insurance community and they even regularly donate to animal charities that help homeless pets.
While Healthy Paws are also a bit cheaper than Figo, they don’t offer wellness and extra care options, their waiting period for accidents is quite high, and they don’t have any discounts to lower the price of your premium.

Figo vs. PetFirst
We have lots of praise for PetFirst, especially because of their simple, transparent pricing structure and sizable discount options. Their awesome customer support and the in-depth knowledge base they provide are only some of the great aspects of their service.
However, unlike Figo, PetFirst don’t provide an option for unlimited annual benefits, they impose an entry fee, and they have a short 14-day free trial period.

Positive Figo Pet Insurance Reviews
I feel Figo is fair and delivers. Our 4-year-old lab mix had a sudden, extremely scary onset of severe kidney disease; we thought we would lose her. Figo came through on what we were owed in terms of reimbursements, without any games or trying to cut any corners. I do wish they had told us far in advance and through prompts that her complete medical history would need to be submitted before any medical claim could be considered. I’m sure this was in my start-up paperwork, but there’s a LOT in that paperwork, so maybe some kind of prompt every time you log in, or a mandatory deadline? Thanks Figo for your help in protecting our pup!

I don’t have enough good things to say about Figo! My dog tore his ACL and has needed TPLO surgery and several months of rehab. Figo makes the claim process incredibly simple and fast! I’ve had all claims covered and the money in my account within 5 days after submitting the claim. Forever grateful that we got Figo and don’t have to worry about finances in making the best decisions for our dog.

I have had Figo for one dog for 2 years and have frequently used the coverage on her active injury lifestyle. Fortunately, our other dog has been covered for 1 year and has had no medical problems (yet). They are the best pet insurance I have had the pleasure of working with no reason to compare or change. Figo stands behind their coverages and expedient payout reimbursements. Thank you for covering our furbabies. You’re awesome!

Figo is incredible. We love how quick they are in response to anything and everything. It is so easy to connect with them to reach a better understanding! They are quick to get claims up and running as well as the reimbursement.

Negative Figo Pet Insurance Reviews
Large premium increases every year. After my first year with them, they doubled my premium and had to pick inferior coverage to keep prices down. After my second year, they increased my premium by 50% forcing me to yet again pick inferior coverage. Did an online quote just to see what it would look like with my dog’s info, and my rate would have only been a 25% increase, leading me to believe they increase your rate more if you use the insurance. They were good at reimbursing me quickly though.

After a few years with Figo, I am saying goodbye. I had hopes that Figo was going to be the disruptor of the pet insurance industry and so it is with a heavy heart that I am giving up. The platform is easy to use and the customer service is good, no doubt, but unfortunately, I cannot continue to be part of a service that raises premiums 50%-100% every year. I value stability and predictability and that is clearly not something I can depend on Figo to deliver. So I am sorry to leave and will not be doing any more business with you or recommending Figo to anyone else either.

I currently have Figo for my 11-year-old dog, I canceled the other two dogs’ policies. As I always loved Figo this year my policy was not grandfathered in with the new underwriting company. I went from a $250 deductible to a $750 deductible/ from 90% to 70% reimbursement/ from 14k to 10k limit and my monthly cost is $113 per month from $91. As you can see, it’s not good.
I am forced to stay with them as my dog is now 11.5 yrs and moving would cost me a lot more. I am completely disappointed in their loyalty to their existing customers. On the other hand, I gave 3 stars because their app/cloud accounts/claim failing and speed of reimbursement is excellent.

Conclusion
To sum up, after researching every angle about its pet insurance coverage offers, the additional healthcare features, its AI-powered approach, pricing, and comparisons, Figo came up as one of our top pet insurers of all time.
The company is a rare find when it comes to providing accident and illness coverage for cats and dogs that reimburses up to 100% of your veterinary expenses.
With innovation at its core, Figo always strives to dig in deeper regarding pet needs and provide upgraded, better services. Their motto is that pets are family and family always comes first.
On the other hand, Figo’s pricing is a bit on the higher end. There are too many customizable options that to some customers might come off a bit overwhelming.

Figo’s Alternatives
Another technology and AI-loving pet insurer, just like Figo, is Lemonade. The company uses innovative methods to provide its customers with a fast, straightforward experience while offering all of the standard features an important player in the pet insurance industry should possess. Affordable pet care coverage plans and pet wellness healthcare are at the forefront of this provider.
TrustedPals is also one of the few services that offer 100% reimbursement of pet owners’ medical expenses. Even though they lack technological advancements, TrustedPals are on the cheaper side while still offering comprehensive pet coverage with unlimited claim benefits, great discounts, and even an annual deductible option of $0.
Petplan is our third alternative to Figo, mainly because they include benefits like boarding kennel or cattery fees, advertising and reward for a lost or stolen pet, and vacation cancellation reimbursement in their basic accident and illness coverage plan, unlike Figo that offers all of these extras on an additional add-on. What’s more, Petplan has no restrictions regarding your pet’s breed, size, gender, age, or location.

How does Figo construct monthly premiums?
Generally, the price of your premium depends on your area of residence and your pet’s characteristics such as age, size, breed, gender, and underlying health conditions. Those are the factors that are pre-set while the second part of the price calculation depends on you. You choose your annual deductible, reimbursement rate, and annual benefits. Lastly, you can attach optional add-ons such as pet wellness healthcare, coverage for veterinary exam fees, and extra benefits which will bump the price of your premium. You can also become eligible for some discounts which can lower your monthly bill.
I rescued my dog from an abandoned neighborhood. What age do I need to fill in when requesting a quote from Figo?
If you’re not sure about your pet’s age you should check with a licensed veterinarian to perform a thorough physical exam of your pet. They will provide the best estimate of your pet’s age and include it in your pet’s medical records.
Is spaying/neutering a requirement for enrolling with Figo?
Absolutely, not! As a matter of fact, no pet insurance company would restrict your pet from coverage based on their reproductive condition. However, some companies might ask about this specific detail and would bump the price of your premium if your pet isn’t spayed/neutered. That’s never the case with Figo.
Does Figo allow transfer of policy ownership?
Yes. You can transfer your pet insurance policy to another person if they legally become the new owner of the enrolled pet. In order for this procedure to be completed with no interruption in coverage, Figo would require the full name, phone number, address, and payment method of the new owner.
